Information About Rubber Roofs

Are you thinking of getting rubber roofs for you home? If you have a flat roof or a roof with a pitch that’s less than 4 in 12, you are limited in what you can install on it. The most popular option for installing on this kind of roof is rubber roofing.  It comes in both rolls and shingles and can be used in combination on a flat roof to create a lightweight, inexpensive, and attractive look. Let take a look what rubber roofs are all about.

  1. They are resistant to the elements
  2. They are affordable
  3. Maintenance is not required
  4. They are easily coated
  5. They last a long time

What Are Rubber
Roofs ?

This is a material consisting of recycled tires, slate dust, and sawdust.  Typically, it comes in rolls which are installed in long, overlapping sheets on the flat roof.  It’s also available in shingles that have the appearance of slate tiles.

How To Install Rubber Roofs

For many years, the only flat roof covering was rolled rubber roofing and, which  is still the case for a primary or base roof.  The rolls are applied to a cleaned stripped roof deck that has been coated with adhesive. The rolls are designed to be cut for fit then just unroll it across the roof and smooth it out to remove any air bubbles.

If you have a flat roof and want a more appealing look, you can apply rubber shingles on top of the rolled rubber roof. All the seams must be taped and sealed then the rubber shingles will be nailed down on top of the rows.

Inexpensive And Lasting

Rubber roofs are inexpensive and are long-lasting for your roof.  The rolls have few, if any, seams, they rarely leak or need very little maintenance. If taken care of,  they can last up to 20 years.

Rolled roofing is inexpensive for flat roofs and costs around $80 a square foot and is not expensive to install.  If you want to use shingles along with the rolls, the roofing shingles can cost more than asphalt shingles but less than slate. They are also less than most metal roofing options with an average cost of around $6 a square foot. The cost of asphalt shingles are typically estimated as being three to four times that of rubber shingles. These tiles are usually sold by the square foot, which is normally the same.

Easy Maintenance

Another advantage to using rubber roofing, especially the rolled rubber roofing, it’s so easy to maintain. If the rubber develops cracks or leaks, you can fix it yourself. Use a coat of liquid rubber, latex, tape, or sealant. Also, install a rubber shingle right over the cracks to help make repairs. You will also have a more attractive look as well. You also need to know that the rubber will expand and contract depending on the temperature. It cannot be installed or worked on in 40 degrees or less.  Also, whatever maintenance you choose will account for additional movement in the future to prevent new cracks.

Rubber Roofs Are A Good Choice For Flat Roofs

Rubber roofing helps to make this easier to solve by offering inexpensive, low maintenance, and some attractive materials.
